Age: Devonian (419 – 359 Ma)
- During the Devonian Period, oxygen levels approached modern day levels and coincided with an explosion of floral and faunal life. The first tetrapod (four-limbed vertebrate animal) and the first jawed fish also appeared during this time. Marine life was dominated by brachiopods and corals, many of which are represented in this rock. At the end of the Devonian, there was another mass extinction which predominantly affected the marine life.
- Look for variations of Devonian fossils consisting of primitive fish, trilobites, ammonites and crinoids, otherwise known as the sea lily.
- Fossils are the remains of a prehistoric plant or animal embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form.
