Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex): Adult Size

Age: Late Cretaceous (68 – 66 Ma)
Family: Tyrannosauridae
Weight: 5.5 - 8.87 metric tons
Size: 12 m long, 3.96 m tall
Diet: Carnivore

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex whose name means “king of the tyrant lizards” is one of the most ferocious predators to ever walk the Earth that lived from the late Jurassic Period to the end of the Cretaceous Period, at which time they reached their greatest dominance. Most Tyrannosaurus were large predators, with very large high skulls exceeding a full meter in length.
  • Tyrannosaurus walked on powerfully developed muscular  hind limbs. If the animal had stood upright, it would have been more than 6.5 meters tall.
  • In contrast to the powerful jaw and legs, the forelimbs of Tyrannosaurus were small. Some paleontologists note that the Tyrannosaurus’ forelimbs and claws could have been used to strike out and slash their prey during close encounters.

Brachiosaurus

Age: Late Jurassic (154 – 150 Ma)
Family: Brachiosauridae
Weight: 28.3 – 46.9 metric tons
Size: 12 - 13 m long
Diet: Ginkgos, Conifers, Tree Ferns and Large Cycads.

  • Brachiosaurus was a sauropod, one of a group of four-legged, plant-eating dinosaurs with long necks and tails and relatively small brains. Unlike other families of sauropods, it had a giraffe-like build with long forelimbs.
  • Brachiosaurus was one of the largest dinosaurs of the Jurassic Era; it lived on prairies filled with ferns, bennettites, and horsetails and moved through vast conifer forests, groves of cycads, seed ferns, and ginkgos.

Pteranodon

Age: Late Cretaceous (86 – 84.5 Ma)
Family: Pteranodontidae
Weight: 50 kg
Size: 6.5 m long
Diet: Carnivore

  • Pteranodon was a pterosaur, a type of flying reptile that included some of the largest known flying reptiles.
  • Pteranodon lived during the Late Cretaceous. Its’ fossil was found in North America dating from about 90 to 100 million years ago. Pteranodon had a wingspan of 7 meters (23 feet) or more, and its’ toothless jaw were long and pelican-like.
  • A crest at the back of the skull (a common feature among pterosaurs) may have functioned in the species recognition; the crest of males were larger.
  • The eyes were relatively large, and the animal may have relied heavily upon sight as it searched for food above the sea.

Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex): Juvenile Size

Age: Late Cretaceous (68 – 66 Ma)
Family: Tyrannosauridae
Weight: 5.5 - 8.87 metric tons
Size: 12 m long, 3.96 m tall
Diet: Carnivore

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex whose name means “king of the tyrant lizards” is one of the most ferocious predators to ever walk the Earth that lived from the late Jurassic Period to the end of the Cretaceous Period, at which time they reached their greatest dominance. Most Tyrannosaurus were large predators, with very large high skulls exceeding full meter in length.
  • Tyrannosaurus hatchlings were about the size of very skinny turkeys, with “arm” that were longer in proportion to their tiny bodies than in adults. Tyrannosaurus hatchlings were also covered in a coat of downy feathers.
